The Senior Publicist works with the Director of Media and Public Relations in planning and implementing promotional campaigns for all exhibitions, public and education programs, and institutional initiatives of the Guggenheim. Interfacing with senior and curatorial staff, the Senior Publicist will contribute towards broader institutional goals of visibility, audience development, and donor recognition and cultivation.
Founded in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is dedicated to promoting the understanding and appreciation of art, primarily of the modern and contemporary periods, through exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications. The Guggenheim museums constellation that began in the 1970s when the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, was joined by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, has since expanded to include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (opened 1997) and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (currently in development). Supervisory Responsibilities:
There are no direct reports associated with this position. However the Senior Publicist is aided by the Media and Public Relations Associate interns, and, for pre-assigned projects, other internal and external colleagues. .
Key Responsibilities:
• Plan and implement the communications schedule across the Media and Public Relations department. Create and execute targeted, results-oriented publicity campaigns as well as implement broad distribution of media announcements for exhibitions, exhibition-related art programming, special events, and museum benefits.
• Assist on campaigns for collection-based exhibitions, public and family programs, Works & Process, and select special events with the input of the department Director.
• Conduct media outreach regarding Guggenheim announcements on staff appointments, grants, key acquisitions, attendance, or retail goals, as assigned.
• Assist the Director of Media and Public Relations with campaigns on Guggenheim Foundation initiatives as assigned.
• Write and edit materials including releases, fact sheets, biographies, pitch letters, website documents and media alerts.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with appropriate curatorial, development, education, web, and publications staff to obtain the information needed to create publicity campaigns and media resources (for print, radio, television, web and blog contacts).
• Collaborate with Marketing colleagues to ensure timely outreach to social media networks for sensitive news announcements
• Serve as a media spokesperson when appropriate
• Organize and supervise media previews for all exhibitions, including: invitation design, compiling media guest lists, distributing press releases and invitations, liaising with Development to identify donor recognition, drafting remarks for the museum Director or key staff. Supervise the department and volunteer staff working the check-in media table and TV crews
• Manage and prioritize all incoming media requests for curators; pursue and facilitate interviews and publicity with living artists
• Coordinate early previewing of exhibitions for art critics with appropriate museum staff.
• Represent museum in collaborations with external publicists, agencies and galleries regarding media outreach and messaging
• Direct external Public Relations firm with project-specific assignments and supplementary outreach and event staffing as needed
• Negotiate broadcast, photography, and web opportunities related to publicity for exhibitions and special events; organize exhibition-related shoots
• Identify and introduce new journalists and their audiences to museum programming. Provide ongoing updates to Associate for maintenance of media lists in Raiser’s Edge.
• Track publicity results, circulating relevant coverage to museum colleagues, and help Director and Associate create activity reports on department projects
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Minimum of seven years of experience in an arts or cultural publicity/marketing department– visual arts environment preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
• Proven record of relevant media placements with excellent local, national, and international contacts in the media.
• Ability to think creatively and strategically.
• Familiarity with all areas of media, including online, blogs, new media and social networks.
• Ability to work at evening or weekend events is required.
• Excellent judgment dealing with highly confidential information.
• Superb attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines on an ongoing basis.
• Strong working knowledge of modern art and contemporary artists and art practices to inform communications with colleagues, art critics, and media
• Reading and speaking knowledge of foreign languages is a plus.
• Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Photoshop is required. Basic knowledge of Adobe and HTML coding a plus.
• Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and CRM email marketing services, specifically Exact Target.
• B.A. preferably in Art History, Communications, English or the humanities
