The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts seeks an experienced leader to serve as the Vice President for Education. Together with the Kennedy Center’s President and as a member of the senior management team, the Vice President for Education will provide visionary and strategic leadership in the areas of education, accessibility, and outreach for the institution, including its affiliates—the National Symphony Orchestra, VSA (the international arts and disability organization), and the Washington National Opera. The Kennedy Center is federally mandated to provide inclusive educational and outreach programs, services, and resources locally and nationally. It is also part of an in-depth MOU with the D.C. Public Schools, to manage the Duke Ellington School of Arts along with George Washington University and the Ellington Fund.
Supervising a team of 14 direct reports and a total of 45 staff members, the VP for Education is responsible for the overall planning, management, and supervision of the programs and operations of the Center’s Education Division. The Center’s national education programs include: Ensuring the Arts for Any Given Child, ARTSEDGE, VSA Network, Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability, Intersections: Arts and Special Education, Partners in Education, Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network, the biennial New Visions/New Voices forum; and the Kennedy Center Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards.
In and around D.C., the Center’s programs include Changing Education Through the Arts, Professional Development Opportunities for Teachers, Explore the Arts, and the Washington, D.C. Partnership Schools. The Center also produces and/or presents over 100 events and performances of dance, music, opera, and theater throughout the season for more than 100,000 local school-aged children.
Additionally, the Center offers numerous skill development programs for young artists and professionals locally and nationally, including the National Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Fellowship Program, Summer Music Institute, and High School Competition; Washington National Opera’s Opera Institute and Kids Create Opera Partnership; Exploring Ballet with Suzanne Farrell; Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead; VSA’s Playwright Discovery Program, Young Soloists, and Visual Arts Programs; arts administration internships; and the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Develop vision and goals for education, accessibility, and outreach by working closely with the President of the Kennedy Center
2. Establish educational priorities and continue, expand, eliminate, or create appropriate programs and resources based on priorities
3. Work with leadership in disability field to ensure that programs and opportunities in the arts are available to people with disabilities
4. Actively engage in planning for the new south campus of the Kennedy Center
5. Further develop image of the Kennedy Center as a national leader in the field of arts education by giving speeches and presentations, establishing collaborations, and writing articles, blogs, and tweets about the Center’s educational work and the field of arts education, in general
6. Work with senior education staff to delegate programmatic and project responsibilities
7. Create budgets with senior education staff and monitor overall expenses and income (earned and contributed) for Education Division
8. Establish working relationship with staff of the U.S. Department of Education, the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the Arts Education Partnership, and other leading arts and education entities
9. Work with senior staff in Development, Public Relations, and Marketing to ensure appropriate support for all education programs of the Center
10. Serve as staff liaison to Education Committee of the Kennedy Center
Board of Trustees and present regularly at meetings of the various
advisory groups for the Center, e.g., the National Committee for the
Performing Arts, the President’s Advisory Committee on the Arts,
Community Advisory Board, and others
11. Provide resources for the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and serve on
its board
Job Requirements
1. Minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of arts education, preferably with a performing arts organization.
2. Undergraduate degree required and a Master’s degree in arts, education or related field preferred or equivalent experience
3. Knowledge of National Core Arts Standards required; experience with innovative uses of technology in arts learning, and research and evaluation preferred
4. Clearly understanding the importance of ensuring that people with disabilities have opportunities in the arts
5. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills—verbal and written
6. Ability to inspire and motivate staff and donors
7. Proven leadership in managing multiple major projects
8. Experience managing a minimum of 10 staff members
