“Todd Haynes’ period drama Carol led the nominations for the 31st Independent Spirit awards, which were prematurely announced before the news conference to unveil them – then taken down – on Tuesday. … Netflix’s first feature film, Beasts of No Nation, and Tom McCarthy’s acclaimed journalistic thriller Spotlight tied for second place, with five nominations apiece, including shared ones for picture and director.
