NPR’s Audience Is Getting Smaller And Older, And All Of Public Radio is Worried About It

The headquarters for National Public Radio, or NPR, are seen in Washington, DC, September 17, 2013. The USD 201 million building, which opened in 2013, serves as the headquarters of the media organization that creates and distributes news, information and music programming to 975 independent radio stations throughout the US, reaching 26 million listeners each week. “Listening among Morning Edition‘s audience, for example, has declined 20 percent among people under 55 in the past five years. Listening for All Things Considered has dropped about 25 percent among those in the 45-to-54 segment. The growth market? People over 65, who were increasing in both the morning and afternoon hours. … As audiences drift to newer on-demand audio sources such as podcasts and streaming, the bonds with local stations – and the contributions that come with them – may be fraying.”
