The Byrd Hoffman Water Mill Foundation (“Watermill”) was founded by international theater and visual artist Robert Wilson. The Foundation owns and operates The Watermill Center, an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts and humanities and a haven for a next generation of artists that embrace avant-garde, multidisciplinary approaches. The Foundation oversees all programs and assets of the organization, including a large collection of art and artefacts and an extensive library and archive.
The Watermill Center integrates performing arts practices with resources from the humanities, research from the sciences, and inspiration from the visual arts. Watermill is unique within the global landscape of experimental theatrical performance, and regularly convenes the brightest minds from all disciplines to do, in Wilson’s words, “what no one else is doing.”
The Executive Director will report to the board, manage all aspects of the Foundation, and oversee management and programming of The Watermill Center. The Executive Director will work with the founding artistic director and the board of directors on supporting the institution’s long-term vision and developing a clear plan to implement this vision.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- The knowledge base and experience to work with an international board, a talented staff, an extensive collection, and world-class performances and presentations;
- The experience, personality and presence to provide stewardship to donors and to work with the board on major gift fundraising;
- Experience, or strong affinity and interest, in the avant-garde aesthetic and multidisciplinary approach of its founder.
- International experience preferred.
