Copland House, the award-winning creative center for American music at Aaron Copland’s National Historic Landmark home one hour north of Manhattan in Westchester County, NY, offers a rewarding opportunity for a galvanizing, imaginative fund-raising leader. Our Development Director will play a central role in a vibrant, nationally-recognized arts organization that is poised for transformational expansion.

The only composer’s home in the U.S. dedicated to nurturing and renewing America’s rich musical heritage through a broad range of public, educational, informational, and electronic-media activities, Copland House’s highly-regarded programs embrace the entire creative process, reaching across the region and nation, and are helping to share the future of concert music in the U.S.

Our successful candidate will lead all aspects of Copland House’s individual, foundation, corporate, and government fundraising efforts. S/he will be an inspiring, trusted presence for donors and funders, creative thinker, persuasive communicator (both verbal and written), strong collaborator, and energetic multi-tasker comfortable working independently or collectively. Areas of responsibility include managing and expanding comprehensive annual campaigns, stewarding current contributors and identifying and cultivating new donors, oversee grant proposals, and developing sponsorship, underwriting, and major giving strategies, all supported by a robust outreach and special events schedule. The Development Director reports to the Artistic & Executive Director, and works with members of the Board of Trustees and resource networks, as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Successful record cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major donors, foundations, corporations, and
  • sponsors
  • Excellent communication and technical skills (writing, public speaking, research, editing, and computer)
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, and at least four years’ experience in the nonprofit development
  • area, with primary focus and experience in the creative and performing arts (particularly music)
  • Professional, outgoing demeanor and exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Strong financial acumen and experience assembling budgets for funding proposals
  • Highly organized and self-motivated, with meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously in a sometimes fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and with a limited support staff
  • Ability to work flexible hours, remotely and on-site, including some evenings/weekends
