Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Production Manager/Technical Director is responsible for overall technical operation for the Weis Center for the Performing Arts. The Production Manager/Technical Director will be the point person for Weis Center events, reviewing contracts and technical riders, and working with budgets. This person will work with artist managers, technical directors, ensemble and production directors, and staff to clarify needs and assess resources. This position supports the Executive Director’s vision for the Center and Bucknell University’s commitment to artistic excellence by maintaining a high level of professionalism.
The Production Manager/Technical Director will provide professional technical support for performances and engagements by University departments and other campus and non-campus users held at the Weis Center. Venue production support is primarily for the Weis Center for the Performing Arts, but may include the Rooke Recital Hall and the Campus Theatre, as well as large scale campus events such as commencement and orientation.
Specialization in sound reinforcement/audio engineering is imperative in this position. When appropriate, this position serves as the primary audio engineer for Weis Center events.
The responsibilities of this position necessitate a flexible schedule and long hours during periods of peak activity.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Weis Center Production Manager/Technical Director will:
- Hire, train, schedule, mentor, and supervise the production staff, as well as on-call technicians, vendors, and students.
- Coordinate the maintenance, repair, and scheduling of all equipment owned by the Weis Center. This includes, but is not limited to audio/lighting equipment, music stands, chairs, risers, soft goods, rigging, A/V equipment, and video (digital) equipment.
- Research, recommend, and facilitate the purchase of all technical equipment for the Weis Center production area.
- Design and maintain all production calendars for events.
- Consult with facility users/faculty directors to determine technical requirements of scheduled productions and appropriate level of support for each event.
- Coordinate technical needs of engagements through all phases including preparation, load in, load out and rehearsals.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with tour managers, production staff with regional venues, the campus, and external users.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree or the equivalent of relevant education plus 8-10 years of professional work experience. Relevant experience can include theatre technical direction/production management and audio engineering with considerable background in sound reinforcement, directing, and implementing all technical requirements outlined in touring artists contracts. Specialization in sound reinforcement/audio engineering, specifically audio over Ethernet is necessary.
In addition to superior audio/sound reinforcement skills, this position requires broad technical knowledge of theater equipment and its use, including but not limited to lighting, rigging, concert staging, video, and projections.
The position requires a positive, strategic, and proactive communicator who is a strong and innovative thinker, especially with regard to university staff, faculty, students, and outside groups.
S/he will require the ability to diplomatically manage the diverse needs of the Center’s various clients and ability to approach challenging situations with enthusiasm, humor, and a positive attitude. S/he must be highly organized and detail oriented and have a working knowledge of and passion for performing arts forms.

Preferred Qualifications
An MFA in Technical Theatre or a related field with emphasis in audio engineering is preferred.
Training and experience in reading, hanging, circuiting, and patching plots, as well as writing cues and running performances would be helpful.
Physical Demands
The position requires physical mobility, climbing into fly space over the stage and auditorium, climbing stairs, and the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds. Lighting and sound design responsibilities require sight and auditory acuity per professional standards.
